Tanzania’s climate is tropical. From May to October daily temperatures vary from 60 to 75 degrees farenheit during the day, 40 to 50 degrees at night. The long rainy season is between April and June. From November to March temperatures during the day hover between 70 and 90 degrees farenheit, and between 60 and 75 degrees at night.
The best time to visit Tanzania is anytime, however, many visitors prefer to visit during spring, June to August and summer from November to March. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro can be tricky during the rainy season.
HEALTH AND MEDICATION
It is recommended that visitors receive vaccinations for Yellow Fever, Typhoid and Hepatitis before travelling to Tanzania. Anti malaria medication purchased before travelling can help prevent the onset of malaria and while most accommodation has mosquito nets, long sleeved shirts and full length trousers are recommended for evening wear.
Many people who climb Mount Kilimanjaro experience some effects from the high altitude. Symptoms range from mild to serious and our guides are trained to detect these symptoms, including, shortness of breath, light headedness, headaches, nausea or vomiting, reduced mental capacity and exhaustion. In most cases treatment requires a return to a lower altitude.
Sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV are very common in Tanzania and it is recommended visitors refrain from sexual activity with native Tanzanians.
ENTRANCE TO TANZANIA
An entry visa is required to Tanzania. These visas may be purchased through the local Tanzanian embassy in your country, or may be purchased upon arrival at all Tanzanian airports and points of entry. The cost of the visa is $50.00 USD for all nationalities except US citizens who must pay $100.00 USD. As tourism is essential to the economy of Tanzania, it is relatively easy to travel throughout the country. However it is advised you exercise caution, do not travel at night and hire a guide if possible, especially for those travelling alone.
TIPPING As the per capita income in Tanzania is less than $400.00 per month, your guides, porters and cooks rely on tips to cover the months when there are fewer tourists and less work. As a general rule tips are expected and are not covered in the cost of the safari. Average tips for your guide/driver is $18-$20/day, your cook $12 - $15/day, and your porter on the mountain $10 - $12/day. Do not pay these tips through your tour company but directly to the guide/porter/cook.
OLDUVAI GORGE
Tanzania has been called the ‘cradle of humanity’ and indeed archaeologists have found stone tools, fossils and even hominid footprints preserved in volcanic ash in the Olduvai Gorge.
TRAVELLING TO TANZANIA
Most tourists to Tanzania arrive via air into Dar Es Salaam airport or Killimanjaro airport. It is recommended for those going on safari or climbing mount Kilimanjaro they fly into Kilimanjaro airport as this is closer to your destination. KLM (Royal Dutch Airways) South African Airways and Condor Airways (Germany) all fly directly into Kilimanjaro. Alternatively you can fly into Nairobi and then travel by land (bus or car) to Arusha.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
Comprehensive travel insurance is essential and should include insurance for medical evacuation as you will be travelling in remote areas where there are few hospitals.
